The Discipline of Leaving
One of the most remarkable abilities human beings possess is adaptability—the ability to change where we live, how we live, and what we allow into our lives in order to make existence more habitable.
If something doesn’t work, change it. If a place doesn’t work, leave it. If a person consistently brings dishonesty, misery, or disrespect into your life, move on.
When we are doing our best to live honestly and encounter people who operate through deception, manipulation, or cowardice, we are under no obligation to remain there at the expense of our own well-being.
I believe human beings are profoundly adaptable, and that somewhere beneath all the noise, we usually know what is right for us. We owe it to ourselves to honor that knowledge.
We work too hard to earn our self-respect, autonomy, discernment, and wisdom to surrender them simply because someone else cannot meet us with the same integrity.
There is no virtue in lowering your standards to accommodate shitty people.
