POEM: Stupid Me

Stupid Me

The sun puts a black coin in my eye.

I spend it.

A raindrop falls without clouds.

I thank the sky anyway.

The snake smiles.

I say, nice teeth.

The rose has thorns.

I say, so do I, once.

I die on Tuesdays mostly.

By Wednesday I have forgotten

what dying taught me.

The earth dances.

I know this.

I watch it from the edge

where I keep going back

to see if this time

the thing in the wind

is something other than

the thing in the wind.

It never is.

I still believe you.

I still believe you.

I still believe you.

The sun puts a black coin in my eye.

I spend it again.
